The Inaccuracy Regarding Late Night Eating

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

It is common knowledge that one should not indulge in excessive eating late at night. The belief is that if you’re sleeping then you’re not using the energy and so it will end up on your hips for eternity.

Is this in fact true, or is this simply another myth, inaccurately propagated through the years? Let’s take a look at some facts that will answer this question.

When your body eats food that it doesn’t burn, it stores the excess energy as fat. When we eat more than we’re burning, all of that stored energy results in the body fat that we see on our bodies.

If you exercise today, you are not only burning the calories that you ate this morning. You will also be using up the calories that your body has stored at other times so it cannot be true that eating at night will cause you to become fat.

It is also the case that everything we do uses energy to some extent. All the little movements you make and even when you’re sleeping, you are in constant use of your energy supplies.

We all know that it wouldn’t be a healthy option for us to starve for more than 12 hours but that is effectively what is being done when we skip our evening meals. Your bodies need a regular supply of nutrients to stay healthy and in top form.

It is obvious however to avoid sugary foods late at night, in fact it’s a good thing to avoid these at any time of the day but if eaten at night they will keep you awake for longer and when you finally do sleep your sleep will be a disturbed one.

Since getting a good night’s sleep is of utmost importance, you’ll want to avoid anything that may get in the way of this. Otherwise, you should know that eating foods late at night is no different from eating them during any time of the day.

A Few Of The Weber BBQ Parts To Keep You Barbecuing

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

New Weber BBQ parts and additional tools for grilling can prolong the life of most past and present makes of Weber grill. Accessories and tools can provide inspiration for new ways to cook with a barbecue, apart from the traditional method. Replacement and additional components can be found easily for gas or charcoal grills in many areas.

The classic design of the Weber charcoal grill has made it popular for several generations. No matter when you purchased yours, or even if it was a hand-me-down, replacement parts, like wheels and grill grates, can keep you grilling on through summers to come. Replacing the six inch wheels which may have become damaged over time will continue to make it easier to change the location of your barbecue.

Over time, grilling and charcoal grates can deteriorate. Rust can damage cooking surfaces as well as the grates used to hold charcoal, particularly if they have not been cleaned well or damaged by weather. Weber provides a selection of grates and cooking grills to replace those damaged, even offering a hinged cooking grill which can make adding fuel to the BBQ easier.

New parts, such as a charcoal fuel rail make it possible to cook in different ways in the barbecue. Fuel rails hold burning charcoal in one area of the barbecue so that indirect heat can cook foods, such as poultry. Foods cooked with indirect heat are baked rather than grilled.

Weber gas barbecues may require new pieces to maintain their reliability and safety. Parts such as igniters or gas tubes for burners can keep the barbecue operating as well as it did in its first days of use. It is possible that ignition systems or gas tubes of the barbecue may become blocked or worn by constant use.

There are many other accessories, tools and parts for barbecues which can make cooking easier or thermometers. Although some barbecues may already be fitted with a temperature gauge, a probe thermometer is a useful tool when cooking large cuts of meat and poultry. By inserting a probe thermometer into a piece of roasting beef or a whole chicken, for instance, it is possible to tell whether the beef is rare, medium or well done, depending on the internal temperature, and if the chicken is cooked and therefore safe to eat.

Rotisseries, specialised roasting racks and griddles can add variety to regular barbecue meals. A rotisserie mechanism can improve how poultry cooks and racks specially made for spare ribs or kabob’s can introduce a new recipes and styles of cooking. With indirect cookery, roasting pans and griddles can be used for pancakes, flat breads and baked deserts.

It is important to keep a barbecue clean between uses and at the end of the grilling season. Tools such as steel brushes and scrapers can prevent rust in grates and grilling racks, making these pieces last longer. Keeping the barbecue protected with one of the covers specifically made for your model will prevent the barbecue from being damaged in changing seasons or bad weather.

There are wealth of replacement Weber BBQ parts as well as components and equipment which can be added to both past and present models of grillers. These parts are useful for the maintenance and function of the barbecue as well as extending the possible uses a cook may imagine. The more equipment and tools used the further uses there are for a barbecue, which could become the primary cooking method in the summer months.

I have even more reviews and information about Weber grill parts and Weber BBQ parts at my website. I will also let you in on a little secret: Where to get them cheaper than anyplace else on the web;) Many thanks for reading, and good luck!

Effective Strategies For Getting To Bed

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Is there anything quite as frustrating as not being able to get to sleep at night? Then you do finally doze off and the alarm wakes you up 2 hours later and you, quite frankly, feel like a zombie! Let’s see what you can do to help you sleep.

We all have bedtime habits such as watching TV or surfing the bed, this makes your brain work hard as you are tired so it won’t switch off when you want it to.

You get into the mindset that you can’t sleep when in effect it is you who are stopping it. Turn of the distractions and you brain will turn off too.

Now this is a tip that students use when they need to study. Get yourself a non fiction book that is full of facts but has zero entertainment value. Your brain recognizes how boring this is and shuts itself down, enabling you to fall asleep.

Another good one to try is to have an hour of punishing exercise sometime through the day. If you do this regularly you body gets used to a

Although some people say all exercise will do this, I tend to stick to cardio and resistance work. Yes I have that buzz immediately afterwards, but by the evening my body is crying out for sleep.

If your wear glasses or contacts, remove these before getting into bed, rather than once you are in it. There are a couple of reasons for doing this.

If you still have them on and force yourself to watch TV through tired eyes they will be harder to close. Your eyes will feel relaxed and more comfortable by taking them off beforehand.

The last thing is that you should never eat at night. The obvious reason for this is weight gain as you won’t burn off the calories and secondly it is another distraction that you are thinking about. Your brain will associate bedtime with food and you will find yourself getting food and snacks instead of relaxing and winding down.

Is Food Consumption Late At Night Bad For Weight Loss

Friday, August 27th, 2010

It seems to be of common knowledge that it is unhealthy to eat at night. The idea behind this being that if you’re not going to be active after food intake then you are more likely to store the food as fat.

Is this in fact true, or is this simply another myth, inaccurately propagated through the years? Let’s take a look at some facts that will answer this question.

Your body will store excess fats that it doesn’t use up. If you generally eat more than your body needs then the excess energy will be stored as fat.

When we’re burning calories, we’re by no means only burning what we’ve most recently eaten, so it’s simply not true when people believe that we’ll gain more fat as a result of eating late at night.

Our bodies never cease to burn calories, in everything we do, even during sleep. We are constantly using energy in every task we perform no matter how big or little, there are continuous processes that are ongoing within our bodies that we are unaware of.

Many experts will tell you that it’s a bad idea to avoid eating anything late at night. After all, the body may then go up to 12 or more hours without acquiring any new means of energy or any nutrients. Would you ever go 12 hours without eating during the middle of the day?

It is obvious however to avoid sugary foods late at night, in fact it’s a good thing to avoid these at any time of the day but if eaten at night they will keep you awake for longer and when you finally do sleep your sleep will be a disturbed one.

So, while it’s obviously important to sleep well at night and we don’t want to disrupt this, the bad things about eating late at night really do have nothing to do with weight gain, unless you’re simply eating extra meals during these times.

A List Of The Most Delicious Italian Places In NYC

Friday, August 27th, 2010

New York City is no stranger to great Italian restaurants. If you are looking for good pasta, the Big Apple has an endless number of choices. From the lower reaches of TriBeCa, all the way up to The Bronx, New York has baked ziti, ravioli, gnocchi and other types of pasta to make any fan of Italian food a happy camper.

While new restaurants will always be opening their doors, some pasta places will never lose their greatness. Here are my top five favorite places to get my pasta fix in New York City as of now.

I went out the other night for a friend’s birthday to Convivio, and decided this was my one of the best pasta places in all of the city. Located in Tudor City, Convivio is not a traditional pasta place with specials like gnochetti with crab and sea urchin.

Another must try place when visiting New York City is the legendary Il Mulino. This place is too good. You will leave so full you will not want to eat for days. One piece of advice: do not fill up on the breadsticks.

Down in TriBeCa is the wildly popular Locanda Verde. You can’t really go wrong with the pastas here, but one of the best dishes they offer is the Orecchiette with homemade duck sausage, broccoli rabe and piave.

If you find yourself on the Lower East Side, a great place to try out is Falai. Located on Clinton Street, this place serves up specialities like Gnudi, with ricotta cheese, baby spinach, brown butter, crema di latte and crispy sage. Enough said.

Finally, a Scott Conant restaurant should be named. While the Meatpacking District lacks in great restaurants, Scarpetta is worth visiting. The spaghetti is the star of the show, served al dente to perfection.

One other place worth mentioning is Spina in the East Village. This place rolls their pasta fresh daily and has a constantly changing list of selections. A great place to try if you are in town looking for a cheaper option.

Silver Goblets Are Excellent Traditional Pieces

Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

Wine goblets can make for a great addition to any dining set. However, they’re not the typical one size fits all type of accessory, as much of what you choose will depend on a number of factors. Price will naturally be an issue, but there are other things that you must definitely take into consideration if you want to ensure that your purchase is a successful one.

Some of the factors that must be considered when wine buying goblets involve exactly how they’ll match up with your kitchen set. While items like crystal ones go with just about anything, things like silver goblets can be very hit or miss and your current dining set must go well with these in order to make it work.

As someone with a preference for the old, you may find silver goblets quite appealing. These are a step up from pewter in terms of quality, but they still do have that traditional appeal that makes them look like they could have come from other centuries.

Anyone eating at your table will most definitely appreciate the added touch, and they’ll feel like they were dining with King Arthur himself at the round table.

In addition to the look and feel of your wine goblets, price will be an issue, as mentioned before. Some wine goblets can literally cost hundreds of dollars per goblet, and silver goblets can certainly fall into this category.

Still, there are many more affordable silver goblets available for purchase and some smart shopping can get you these wine goblets at much lower prices than you’d think.

While visiting stores can also expose you to a wide variety of options, you simply can’t find better deals on silver goblets and other wine goblets than you can online.

A quick search can yield hundreds of different options, and shipping prices are extremely reasonable as well. This is definitely the recommended course of action for anyone interested in goblet shopping.

Coffee Looked At In Terms Of Pros And Drawbacks

Friday, August 20th, 2010

If you’re a regular coffee drinker, this question has probably crossed your mind at one point in time. If you’re a constant worrier like I am, then it may cross your mind just about every day.

Caffeine can boost our energy levels like nothing else when we’re feeling weary, and its taste really grows on you. That would explain why there are hundreds of millions of coffee drinkers in the world.

Studies have shown that a cup of coffee stimulates mental alertness and boosts focus and productivity. Those looking to enhance their performance with respect to work related tasks will generally benefit from a cup of coffee.

It’s clear, then, that coffee has a positive effect on the way the brain functions. However, there are differing opinions as to whether coffee is good for the body as a whole. Some say it’s harmless, whereas others are convinced it can’t be beneficial.

Research has shown that coffee might raise blood pressure levels, and even heart rates, over time. Many people are alarmed by this idea.

Conversely, other research programs have indicated that only drinking large quantities of coffee very frequently would produce these effects. If you’re consuming an average of about one cup of coffee a day, then you have nothing to worry about.

Then, of course, we have the beneficial effects of the antioxidants in coffee. Studies have shown that they offer a line of defense against the development of diseases such as cancer. This is not hard to believe when we consider that coffee is natural. The same qualities are also to be found in red wine, another natural product.

When all is said and done, coffee should be consumed in moderation. Too much of anything is never a good thing, and you should treat any powerful stimulant with care, especially as you age.

Chocolate May Not Be All Unhealthy

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

Ah chocolate, that delicious creamy treat that is everyone’s vice. We just can’t get enough of the stuff, even though we know the amount we consume is ultimately bad for us, we just can’t resist it, so there tends to be a guilt edged pleasure about eating it. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a healthy chocolate?

And the good new is that there is a healthy chocolate out there. There are many good things in chocolate such as vitamins and minerals, so what is it that makes it generally so unhealthy?

The thing is we mess about with our chocolate something rotten. We get the basic product then add loads of other stuff to it, such as extra butter, sugar, milk solids etc which enhance the flavor but make it very fattening. Dark chocolate, however, doesn’t have any of these added, but there is one more thing to think about.

Our bodies do not recognize chocolate as food, weird huh? Eat a bar of chocolate on its own and your body will pick up on the sugar etc and just store it, and the minerals and vitamins won’t be absorbed.

It’s a little known fact that dark chocolate has a very high iron content; so a perfect complement is food such a blueberries which are rich in vitamin C. This balances the nutrition and makes sure that your body absorbs the iron from the chocolate properly, and tastes delicious at the same time.

As dark chocolate contains a lot of iron, eating it with foods high in Vitamin C ensures that all the nutrients are absorbed and you get all the benefits. You have the best of both world here; you get all the iron, vitamins etc and it tastes absolutely gorgeous as well.

I used to work as a chocolatier, so you can imagine how much chocolate I used to eat! As I ate dark chocolate complimented with strawberries, blueberries, nuts etc I never put any weight on. A blood test also proved that I had the optimum level of minerals and vitamins in my system.

Next time you need your chocolate fix, ignore the fattening and unhealthy milk chocolate and reach for the dark chocolate with the fruit and nuts. No guilt but every bit as delicious.

Like everything else, if you eat too much chocolate it becomes unhealthy, so watch your consumption.

The Sensibility Of Cleaning Your Dishes As You Prepare Food

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

Cooking is one of our favorite hobbies, we love going into the kitchen and creating tasty meals and treats fro our loved ones. What we don’t love, however, is the trail of destruction that we leave behind. How come there’s so much mess?

This has bugged us for generations, well, since the days of masters and servants ceased to exist. At one time, all our ancestors had to do was sit at the table, have their meals brought to them and then retire. The staff downstairs had to worry about all the tidying up.

If you were at the other end of the social scale and didn’t have servants it wasn’t a problem either as you couldn’t afford to cook elaborate meals so there was little, if anything to clean up.

The thing is, with today’s so called time saving gadgets, there seems to be more mess than ever. As well as utensils we have used, there are also a stack of appliances such as blenders that need to be cleaned out.

The nearest most of us have to servants these days is a cleaner once or twice a week, and a war zone kitchen isn’t really in her job description! So we still stress about how we can continue cooking, but without the mess.

Cooking is one of my great passions in life, tidying up after myself is not. I’ve tried various things to lessen this chore; most of them didn’t work, I’m happy to report that this one did.

Clean as you go is now my kitchen motto. Keep a bowl of hot, soapy water and wash each piece as soon as you’ve used it. Then when you’ve finished, there will only be the last couple of things that you’ve used, so much better than a teetering pile of dirty dishes.

In the long run, leaving everything to the end is making more work for yourself. This is particularly difficult if you have guests for dinner, you know what a state your kitchen is in but can’t abandon your guests to go and clean up. Cleaning as you go means you can enjoy your evening as you know your kitchen is okay.
