The Inaccuracy Regarding Late Night Eating

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

It is common knowledge that one should not indulge in excessive eating late at night. The belief is that if you’re sleeping then you’re not using the energy and so it will end up on your hips for eternity.

Is this in fact true, or is this simply another myth, inaccurately propagated through the years? Let’s take a look at some facts that will answer this question.

When your body eats food that it doesn’t burn, it stores the excess energy as fat. When we eat more than we’re burning, all of that stored energy results in the body fat that we see on our bodies.

If you exercise today, you are not only burning the calories that you ate this morning. You will also be using up the calories that your body has stored at other times so it cannot be true that eating at night will cause you to become fat.

It is also the case that everything we do uses energy to some extent. All the little movements you make and even when you’re sleeping, you are in constant use of your energy supplies.

We all know that it wouldn’t be a healthy option for us to starve for more than 12 hours but that is effectively what is being done when we skip our evening meals. Your bodies need a regular supply of nutrients to stay healthy and in top form.

It is obvious however to avoid sugary foods late at night, in fact it’s a good thing to avoid these at any time of the day but if eaten at night they will keep you awake for longer and when you finally do sleep your sleep will be a disturbed one.

Since getting a good night’s sleep is of utmost importance, you’ll want to avoid anything that may get in the way of this. Otherwise, you should know that eating foods late at night is no different from eating them during any time of the day.

Effective Strategies For Getting To Bed

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Is there anything quite as frustrating as not being able to get to sleep at night? Then you do finally doze off and the alarm wakes you up 2 hours later and you, quite frankly, feel like a zombie! Let’s see what you can do to help you sleep.

We all have bedtime habits such as watching TV or surfing the bed, this makes your brain work hard as you are tired so it won’t switch off when you want it to.

You get into the mindset that you can’t sleep when in effect it is you who are stopping it. Turn of the distractions and you brain will turn off too.

Now this is a tip that students use when they need to study. Get yourself a non fiction book that is full of facts but has zero entertainment value. Your brain recognizes how boring this is and shuts itself down, enabling you to fall asleep.

Another good one to try is to have an hour of punishing exercise sometime through the day. If you do this regularly you body gets used to a

Although some people say all exercise will do this, I tend to stick to cardio and resistance work. Yes I have that buzz immediately afterwards, but by the evening my body is crying out for sleep.

If your wear glasses or contacts, remove these before getting into bed, rather than once you are in it. There are a couple of reasons for doing this.

If you still have them on and force yourself to watch TV through tired eyes they will be harder to close. Your eyes will feel relaxed and more comfortable by taking them off beforehand.

The last thing is that you should never eat at night. The obvious reason for this is weight gain as you won’t burn off the calories and secondly it is another distraction that you are thinking about. Your brain will associate bedtime with food and you will find yourself getting food and snacks instead of relaxing and winding down.

Why A Tongue Scraper Is A Must

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

In recent years, the use of the tongue scraper has increased in popularity, and with good reason. They’re very effective. Many people mistake the root of bad breath and assume it’s caused by eating the wrong foods, or that it lives in the teeth and gums. While this is true, the main source of bad breath comes from the back part of the tongue.

Contrary to popular belief, the biggest cause of bad breath is bacteria that lives and grows on the back of your tongue. Since there are deep grooves in your tongue (the taste buds in the back of your tongue, these are called papillae), bacteria thrive within these grooves grows and is directly responsible for the bad smells that may emanate from your mouth. Since bacteria in this kind of environment doesn’t get much oxygen, this is exactly what makes it smell bad.

While using mouthwash and brushing your teeth will both help with this, they’ll only mask the source of the issue and won’t really attack the heart of it. Scraping your tongue will gather up a good portion of these bacteria, and essentially removes them from your tongue.

Tongue scraping is the easiest and cheapest means of removing these bacteria. Many people prefer to use their toothbrush to scrape the surface of their tongues when they brush their teeth. This isn’t the best idea, and I’ll explain why:

1) They often fail to reach the back of their tongue, which is where most of the bad breath bacteria live. Besides, seriously trying to reach the back of your tongue with a toothbrush could easily set off a gag reflex.

2. Toothbrush bristles were meant for scraping your teeth, not your tongue. The tissue on your tongue is far more sensitive than the surface of your teeth, and using a toothbrush can seriously irritate it.

3) Even if you can somehow fit a toothbrush into your mouth so that it reaches the back of your tongue, a toothbrush is narrow and won’t be able to cover the whole span of your tongue from left to right.

The shape, smooth surface, and the price of a tongue scraper make it the most conducive thing out there when it comes to removing the source of bad breath. One tongue scraper could easily last for a year or two, making it well worth the money spent (they normally go for around 10 dollars, sometimes less).

The use of a tongue scraper is absolutely recommended for anyone looking to take care of their breath. Whether you’re doing this and only this, or combining it with mouthwashes or other breath care systems, any dental professional would agree that it’s always something you should do.

Is Food Consumption Late At Night Bad For Weight Loss

Friday, August 27th, 2010

It seems to be of common knowledge that it is unhealthy to eat at night. The idea behind this being that if you’re not going to be active after food intake then you are more likely to store the food as fat.

Is this in fact true, or is this simply another myth, inaccurately propagated through the years? Let’s take a look at some facts that will answer this question.

Your body will store excess fats that it doesn’t use up. If you generally eat more than your body needs then the excess energy will be stored as fat.

When we’re burning calories, we’re by no means only burning what we’ve most recently eaten, so it’s simply not true when people believe that we’ll gain more fat as a result of eating late at night.

Our bodies never cease to burn calories, in everything we do, even during sleep. We are constantly using energy in every task we perform no matter how big or little, there are continuous processes that are ongoing within our bodies that we are unaware of.

Many experts will tell you that it’s a bad idea to avoid eating anything late at night. After all, the body may then go up to 12 or more hours without acquiring any new means of energy or any nutrients. Would you ever go 12 hours without eating during the middle of the day?

It is obvious however to avoid sugary foods late at night, in fact it’s a good thing to avoid these at any time of the day but if eaten at night they will keep you awake for longer and when you finally do sleep your sleep will be a disturbed one.

So, while it’s obviously important to sleep well at night and we don’t want to disrupt this, the bad things about eating late at night really do have nothing to do with weight gain, unless you’re simply eating extra meals during these times.

Coffee Looked At In Terms Of Pros And Drawbacks

Friday, August 20th, 2010

If you’re a regular coffee drinker, this question has probably crossed your mind at one point in time. If you’re a constant worrier like I am, then it may cross your mind just about every day.

Caffeine can boost our energy levels like nothing else when we’re feeling weary, and its taste really grows on you. That would explain why there are hundreds of millions of coffee drinkers in the world.

Studies have shown that a cup of coffee stimulates mental alertness and boosts focus and productivity. Those looking to enhance their performance with respect to work related tasks will generally benefit from a cup of coffee.

It’s clear, then, that coffee has a positive effect on the way the brain functions. However, there are differing opinions as to whether coffee is good for the body as a whole. Some say it’s harmless, whereas others are convinced it can’t be beneficial.

Research has shown that coffee might raise blood pressure levels, and even heart rates, over time. Many people are alarmed by this idea.

Conversely, other research programs have indicated that only drinking large quantities of coffee very frequently would produce these effects. If you’re consuming an average of about one cup of coffee a day, then you have nothing to worry about.

Then, of course, we have the beneficial effects of the antioxidants in coffee. Studies have shown that they offer a line of defense against the development of diseases such as cancer. This is not hard to believe when we consider that coffee is natural. The same qualities are also to be found in red wine, another natural product.

When all is said and done, coffee should be consumed in moderation. Too much of anything is never a good thing, and you should treat any powerful stimulant with care, especially as you age.

Chocolate May Not Be All Unhealthy

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

Ah chocolate, that delicious creamy treat that is everyone’s vice. We just can’t get enough of the stuff, even though we know the amount we consume is ultimately bad for us, we just can’t resist it, so there tends to be a guilt edged pleasure about eating it. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a healthy chocolate?

And the good new is that there is a healthy chocolate out there. There are many good things in chocolate such as vitamins and minerals, so what is it that makes it generally so unhealthy?

The thing is we mess about with our chocolate something rotten. We get the basic product then add loads of other stuff to it, such as extra butter, sugar, milk solids etc which enhance the flavor but make it very fattening. Dark chocolate, however, doesn’t have any of these added, but there is one more thing to think about.

Our bodies do not recognize chocolate as food, weird huh? Eat a bar of chocolate on its own and your body will pick up on the sugar etc and just store it, and the minerals and vitamins won’t be absorbed.

It’s a little known fact that dark chocolate has a very high iron content; so a perfect complement is food such a blueberries which are rich in vitamin C. This balances the nutrition and makes sure that your body absorbs the iron from the chocolate properly, and tastes delicious at the same time.

As dark chocolate contains a lot of iron, eating it with foods high in Vitamin C ensures that all the nutrients are absorbed and you get all the benefits. You have the best of both world here; you get all the iron, vitamins etc and it tastes absolutely gorgeous as well.

I used to work as a chocolatier, so you can imagine how much chocolate I used to eat! As I ate dark chocolate complimented with strawberries, blueberries, nuts etc I never put any weight on. A blood test also proved that I had the optimum level of minerals and vitamins in my system.

Next time you need your chocolate fix, ignore the fattening and unhealthy milk chocolate and reach for the dark chocolate with the fruit and nuts. No guilt but every bit as delicious.

Like everything else, if you eat too much chocolate it becomes unhealthy, so watch your consumption.

Is Coffee At Evening An Unwise Idea?

Monday, August 16th, 2010

Hands up who loves their caffeine boosts? Yep me too, I can’t imagine a day when I won’t consume my numerous cup of coffee to get me going in the morning and then sustain me throughout the day.

I have to have drinks containing caffeine throughout the day to keep me motivated and able to concentrate. Those big jobs that I’ve stayed late to complete on time should have ‘caffeine’ mentioned in the credits, as I couldn’t have done them without it!

Resisting caffeine late at night is the hardest part. There’s nothing quite like a coffee to round off a meal in a restaurant, and this is the hardest one for me to say no to.

Now you may be asking why I’m denying myself something that I enjoy so much, because of the experts, that’s why. You know the ones; they tell us that drinking caffeine late at night will stop us sleeping.

They reckon that it can take up to 10 hours for caffeine to leave your system, so you so the math. Whatever time you have your last caffeinated drink, add 10 hours on. This also depends on the how your body reacts after the withdrawal of the caffeine.

I don’ t know if you have ever notice, but those who take sugar experience what can only be described as a crash. The odd thing is that this crash might actually aid sleep.

Try this little test to find out where you stand. If you have your last caffeinated drink at 2 pm, try it at 3pm the next day, 4pm the day after that and so on. You will then know when you can have your last coffee and still be able to sleep.

Don’t get impatient and only have the last drink a little later each day. If you skip a couple of stages you may well end up in being in a cycle of sleepless nights and gallons of coffee to keep you going while you’re awake.

Things We Must Have Knowledge About When It Comes To Fruit Drinks

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

With so many drinks on the market that are labeled as juice, why do they actually contain hardly any?

Juice seems to have many different meanings. To me, fruit juice is extracted from real fruit and is both tasty and full of nutrients. To some drinks manufacturers, it seems to mean that a bland tasting liquid can be passed of as juice if its color co-ordinates with its name! Yet still we buy them, under the assumption that as they have some fruit in them they must be healthy.

In the majority of cases, unfortunately, this just isn’t the case. The pictures and descriptions blatantly mislead you into drinking something that isn’t what you think it is.

The actual percentage of real juice in these drinks varies wildly. It’s disgusting to think that most of them have a great deal less than 50% of actual juice.

So what makes up the difference? Well I’ll tell you, all manner of sweeteners, preservatives and other fancy names ingredients which they feel the need to add. There are multiple names for sweeteners, I bet you have no problem is spotting Fructose, Syrup and Sucrose on the label. These all add up to one thing; far too much sugar.

All fruits have natural sugars; that is part of why we enjoy them so much, their sweetness. The only sugar we need are these natural sugars and no extra, yet the amount that we are consuming via these drinks is staggering. If the percentage of actual juice is 30%, the other 70% is made up of all manner of additives, and most of them are sugar under different names.

Although public awareness is slowly grasping this information, there are still millions of us consuming these drinks under the misconception that are consuming something healthy. If you are on a diet and the weight isn’t shifting, these drinks will have a lot to do with it.

Juice is juice is juice, so only buy pure fruit juice with a percentage of 100%. Ignore blends, cocktails, drinks, concentrates, these aren’t pure and will contain all the ingredients that we discussed earlier.

A Few Tips For Travelers By Air

Saturday, August 14th, 2010

While it gets us from place to place traveling by airplane is generally an annoying experience. Between finding transportation, packing our bags, sitting on lines, and spending a good deal of money to sit on a crowded plane, there’s not much to like about it.

Just about everyone I know feels the same way, and there’s a good chance that you do too. Realistically, who would like the things I just mentioned? If you share my opinions, then you’ll probably be interested in reading a few pieces of the advice I’m about to share with you.

As far as your luggage goes, try to make it the smallest bag possible. Make it small enough to the point where you can put it in the overhead bin on your plane.

If you find yourself waiting for the baggage check after your flight, you’ll lose time and you’ll be tired. I’ve also known plenty of people who have had their bags lost by the airlines during their flights.

Try to make sure that you never go hungry while in the air either. Since most companies these days won’t even give you a meal, the best advice is to bring a few things to munch on while in the air.

Some may even charge you for food nowadays, and the food isn’t even good to begin with! Visit some of the many restaurants or stores that may be inside the airport before you take off, and plan ahead.

I’m also going to suggest that you always try going to the bathroom in advance. Since it can take a while to get up to use the bathroom on the plane, you’re better off avoiding this by taking care of this before the flight.

Bring your own pillow. The pillows on airplanes are pretty uncomfortable to say the least. By bringing an accessory like a microbead travel pillow, you can very easily find comfort and even sleep while flying through the air.
