Was it possibly Forever and Ever Amen? This CD brings back great memories and I think the sound was a bit more polished, but the amazing song writing was still there. Songs like Selfless, Cold, and Composed, Missing the War, the Battle of Who Could Care Less, and others were all great.

Then there was the Biography of Reinhold Messner. All in all, a bit less consistent but the song “Magic” may be better than any other they ever made.

Neither the self titled debut or Reinhold Messner seem to compare in depth and charm to Forever and Ever Amen, thereby getting the vote for the best Ben Folds Five album of all-time.

Indie rock music continues to make its imprint in the music world, and a deep one at that. With so many new bands emerging, it seems like this trend will continue to evolve, and fans are naturally grateful for it. 2008 and 2009 have been some great years, marked by many new bands making their way into the scene. While I could easily name 15 or 20 great debuts during the last two years, I’m only going to focus on three during this article. This will require a lot of thought, since so many albums are worthy of mention here.

Anyway, let’s give this a whirl. If you haven’t heard any of these albums for any reason, I’d recommend giving them a listen as soon as you possibly can.

If you never heard Bon Iver’s debut, I’d definitely suggest checking it out. This is an album that consists of raw folk, packed with emotion. The simplicity of the music is beautiful, and many critics and fans agree.

This is an album that consists of some great songs from beginning to end. Standout tracks like “Flume”, “Skinny Love”, and others quickly became indie rock staples after the album was released.

The second debut that makes my list is Vampire Weekend’s self titled debut. This album came out in late 2008, and it marked the birth of a truly original and sophisticated band. With influences that span from classical to world music to indie rock, this is one of the best bands in modern music.

Lastly, Fleet Foxes came out with a debut in 2008 that was exceptional. The best way to describe the band’s music is a mix of bluegrass, indie rock, and barber shop quartet. I know that’s hard to explain, but their rich melodies will pull you in on first listen.

These are all instant classics in my mind, and worthy of repeated listens.

The second band that I’d like to discuss is Electric Light Orchestra, more commonly known as ELO. I believe that Jeff Lynne is one of the most underrated songwriters in the history of music.

Perhaps the song that receives the most airplay these days is Mr. Blue Sky, also extremely popular in movies and on commercials. The fact that so much of the band’s music is still played over 30 years later is a testament to how influential their music was.

ELO’s sound was truly unique for the time. They were the first rock band to blend the sounds of a symphony orchestra with rock and roll. On top of that, they used futuristic sounds that made the band seem light years ahead of many others.

The New Moon soundtrack has quickly made a buzz in the indie music world, and deservedly so. If you haven’t listened to it yet, here’s a brief synopsis of the album.

If you know anything about the New Moon series and these bands, you’re probably confused by the fact that all of these bands have produced original music for this soundtrack.

I didn’t even have a clue as to what New Moon was before I read a review for this album. I don’t watch the WB and I had no interest in seeing such a movie. I still have no interest in doing so, but I do love the soundtrack.

This is different from most soundtracks in the sense that I doubt these bands have ever even watched the show. In fact, these are the last bands I’d expect to see on a show that appeals to teens with an affinity for pop culture.

Regardless of the above, they’ve really contributed to this soundtrack with some exciting, relevant, and original compositions. This is truly one of the better indie compilations of the past few years, as surprising as that may sound.

There are more great bands on this soundtrack than just about any soundtrack I’ve heard within the last year or two. From Muse and Thom York to Bon Iver and St. Vincent, these are just a few of the many accomplished artists and bands on the New Moon soundtrack.

The guitar based songs here are great, and some thrilling solos capture the vampire essence of the movie throughout. The electronic based tracks are pretty intriguing too, with a spooky feel to them that blends right into the theme of the soundtrack.

Forget about what this was made for. These could all be the songs for a Hannah Montana soundtrack for all I care. If the music is this good, I’ll be buying it.
