CvWow: Helps you write a decent CV
Friday, December 16th, 2011How to write the perfect cover letter
A cover letter is your lifeline when sending potential employers your CV. Having a covering letter ensures you can comfortably share information with employers which do not necessarily fit in to the rigid CV structure. Having both a CV and Covering letter will most definately put you in good steed and if done properly will make the difference between success and failure.
Note: Your covering letter must be unique, addressed personally to a potential employer and be of decent stature. Wow’ing your CV will ensure it stands out.
Step 1: All letters should start with…
.. A relevant address
More suitably, your address and contact details including an e-mail address in a predomant place so that the potential employer notices it straight away. After that ensure the letter includes the name and address of the employer. Make sure you are addressing it personally to the recruitment manager / contact by calling the company and asking (check spelling to!)
There is never a set way to write a covering letter, ensure you plan a structure and get your message across without repeating yourself. Always watch; Clarity, Intelligence, Conciseness.
When opening a letter keep it simple, start ensuring you tell them what you want / looking for. Always prompt with the position you are applying for.
Why is the job good for me?
Once the ice is broken it is time to make clear to the potential employer what exactly attracted you to the advertised role. Why do you want that job? Make sure you always deal with the specifics with you main motivation being something other than the money. Tie things together for instance if you are looking to become a chef and love eating out then marry the two accordingly.
Why am I good for the job?
Congratulations, the employer now knows you are perfect for the role. Now its time to talk about how perfectly you match the skillsets, qualifications that are required. Don’t repeat things from your CV and this can be boring for the employer to read. If you say you are good at something, always give examples as to why you are good.
You can use your examples to bring in additional skills that may not be directly relevant. Working in things such as IT skills, or your organisational skills is a good idea. Try to offer the reader something unique and beneficial. Use interesting examples that cast you in a separate light to others applying for the position.
Closing remarks..
Finish by telling the employer when you are free for interview and by stating the earliest date of which you are free to start work. Invite the employer to contact you if they require any further information. Always sign the letter to add a personal, professional touch.
By making your covering letter a structured, informative piece you can achieve a clear and concise argument as to why you are the best “Wow” candidate. If your letter is boring, repeatative or unorganised this would be a bad reflection of you. The covering letter will be the 1st impression! Make it count!
Make sure your covering letter says everything you wanted to say about you.
